Overcoming fear
I love how with the Gospel you can find your answers to anything. Jojo was sharing with me some answers she had received to questions we had, and it was so neat! She told me that her session director at EFY told them in a devotional that you can find the answer to any question you have in the scriptures. I'm planning on taking that challenge to know if my questions will be answered by my searching. I have come to find though that when you search and have faith you will find answers, they will come little by little when they need to.
I'm starting to become really afraid about the future and what's going to happen. I love dating my best friend Trevor Sperry. He is the most fantastic guy I've ever met. He respects me and cares about me more than any guy I've ever met or been friends with. He faithfully fulfills his calling as Elders Quorum President, and he is so much fun to be with. We do everything together from making food to running errands to watching movies and playing with each other. Those are just a few things to list. We read scriptures together and can talk about the blessings of being a member of the Church. I love the qualities he has. His family is great, too, and he really cares about them. Trevor met Dad this past Tuesday and I met his family on Wednesday since they all came up to Utah from New Mexico and Colorado.
As we date, I've realized we have to be cautious and remember what we want most. I want to get married in the temple and I know we have to remain worthy at all times to be able to go to the temple and receive my endowments and to be married for time and all eternity. I am not saying that I we are going to get married, because it is too soon to tell, but having this goal in mind makes such a difference.
My question is one that many ask during the dating process, and the modern scriptural answer, one of them, I have found is to have faith and not fear. That phrase has been a big influence in my life in so many realms, and it is going to continue to be I think my entire life. I love the prophets and apostles and the wonderful resources we have as members of the church to find answers to our questions. Here is the excerpt of an article I found that I really enjoy and is helping me to move forward in faith.
“I am not saying you shouldn’t be very careful about something as significant and serious as marriage. … Yes, there are cautions and considerations to make, but once there has been genuine illumination, beware the temptation to retreat from a good thing. If it was right when you prayed about it and trusted it and lived for it, it is right now. Don’t give up when the pressure mounts. You can find an apartment. You can win over your mother-in-law. You can sell your harmonica and therein fund one more meal. It’s been done before. Don’t give in. Certainly don’t give in to that being who is bent on the destruction of your happiness. He wants everyone to be miserable like unto himself. Face your doubts. Master your fears. ‘Cast not away therefore your confidence.’ Stay the course and see the beauty of life unfold for you.”
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, “Cast Not Away Therefore Your Confidence,” Brigham Young University devotional address, March 2, 1999.
Don't give up and keep pressing forward with faith, no matter what is going on and the questions you have. I don't know what is going to happen yet, and I have also found that it will take time to come to know the answer. We also have to have faith in the Lord's timing, including receiving answers to our questions. Trevor, if you read this, I am so happy you are my best friend and I am so happy we are dating. I know this journey of dating is not always going to be easy, but I'm glad we have each other and can be here for one another. The most important thing to know is that right now what we're doing is right, and I feel that it is. I am happy I listened to Heavenly Father about moving here and have enough faith in Him that He will guide me in my choices. I know He's aware of us and will be here for us no matter what. Te quiero mucho!!!! :) To everyone else, remember, "Don't trade what you want most for what you want at the moment" and to Have Faith, Not Fear.
