Detours
Welcome to my first blog post of 2014! I meant to write sooner, but I spent some time with my family, worked quite a bit and then started my last semester of my undergraduate career this week! It's been crazy!
You know, life is about constant change. If we're staying the same, there is no progression. Growing, changing and moving on in our lives is what time is all about. It can be exciting and frustrating at times.
For those of us who travel, especially on the roads of Utah with construction work, there are often times detours along our journey that we just have to take. We can't avoid them, and we can't just go the way we were going to in the first place because it's not going to be the same.
Our lives are much like these roads with detours. We're all on our own paths on the journey of life. Many times we'll be going down one path in our lives and think it's the right way to be going, and then life gives us a detour. A sudden death, a serious illness, an accident, financial loss and emotional trauma are some of serious detours we could face. Others could include a bad grade, a dishonest act and a hurt friendship. There are so many other things that move us from the original path we are going in. We don't know why we have to change directions, and we just want to go the way we were planning, but most times the detour ends up safer than if we stayed on our original path. It's definitely not the most convenient.
I have had a few detours on my path. My mom passed away a month before high school graduation. A year ago I thought I would be getting married, but I'm not getting married anytime soon. This is my fifth year of college and I thought I would be graduated already. Those are some of the biggest detours I've had in my life.
I was talking about this concept with my aunt over the holidays, and she helped me realize a few things. In the grand scheme of things, it's okay to get off the original path and try a new path, as long as we're headed in the same direction and make it to our end destination. Sometimes we try a completely new road and have to get back on the right road. And that's okay. Our Savior, Jesus Christ, made it possible for us to come here and have these experiences to help us discover the path to eternal life. Since we're all on different paths that all lead to the same destination, we can't judge each other or set expectations because every path is different. Each path has its own challenges and struggles. The important thing is to stay strong, do your best and help others to do their best on their paths.
I'm grateful for the detours I've had in my life. They've helped shape me as I've had to decide how I would continue down my path despite the detours that have come my way. I know I'm doing the right things to help me reach my end goal of eternal life. I've made some choices that have taken me down some paths I wasn't originally anticipating taking, but I know they have helped me become who I am today and have brought me closer to Christ. As President Uchtdorf said in the quote above, our destiny is determined by us trying and moving forward the best we can.
What do you do to help you move forward when detours appear on your path? I'll tell you more of my journey and how the detours in my life are helping me move forward and closer to Christ in my next post! Stay tuned!
