Why I Believe: General Conference
Awhile ago I started a bunch of blog post drafts creating a new series: Why I Believe. I didn't end up writing any posts, so I'm not sure what I was exactly thinking when I came up with them, but the great thing is I can figure it out along the way, right? :)
As I am preparing to submit my mission papers next week (yes, that's where I'm at in the process!) and because I love the Gospel, I want to share my thoughts and beliefs about various Church topics. So here we go!
Why I Believe: General Conference
General Conference happens every six months, on the first weekends of April and October, and members of the LDS church listen to leaders give talks for about 10 hours. You read that right - 10 hours of direct revelation from God to His children! What a blessing!
There are 5 sessions during the main weekend: Saturday Morning, Saturday Afternoon, Priesthood Session, Sunday Morning and Sunday Afternoon. Each session is 2 hours long. The week before the main sessions, women are instructed in the General Women's Meeting. Prior to this year, the Relief Society (18+) would have a yearly meeting in October, and the young women (ages 12-18) would have a yearly meeting in April. April 2014 was the first time these meetings were combined into a General Women's Meeting. This is how the meeting will be held every six months.
Now for those who might read this and say, "You are crazy to watch 10 hours of old people talking. You have better things to do than that." Yes, it can be a sacrifice to give your whole weekend to watching General Conference. The last few conferences I haven't been able to watch the women's meetings because I have had to work. It's understandable. I do know, though, that when I make the sacrifice to watch, my life is blessed.
Wouldn't it be great to receive direction and guidance from God in our daily life? We can! Through our prophet and apostles, who I believe lead and guide our church today, we are given ways to improve our lives and how we can become more like Him. God loves us and He wants to speak to us. He does this through the scriptures written in days of old, and through modern scripture, which is what General Conference talks become. I believe that God spoke to prophets of old, and I believe that He speaks to prophets today.
This world has become crazy and confusing. I know that I want clarity and peace in my life. I find it through revelation given by God to leaders of His church that speak in General Conference. Their words make sense and are spoken just for us. I know it.
I know that as we listen to General Conference and study the words spoken afterwards that our lives will be blessed and we will come to know our Savior and Heavenly Father, their will for us and how we can become better. I have seen it in my life and have been richly blessed because of it. This is His church and I'm so grateful to be a part of it.
